*JACKET 01

This jacket was designed and prototyped for a human centered design project on
sustainable fashion and how to reduce waste in the fashion industry. The purpose of this
jacket was to construct it out of recycled clothing parts from previously discarded garments.
This included old shirts and jeans that were landfill bound. The *JACKET 01 project specifically
included figuring out how to make a garment pattern out of intact, used clothing, and how to
strategically use the scraps to both create as little waste as possible, and to design a jacket
that was appealing in the current fashion market.

The secondary goal of this project, if expanded on, was to create a brand influenced by this
construction style, in order to collaborate with larger high fashion brands. Currently, many brands
throw away clothes after a season to maintain an artificial rarity and expensive price for their items.
These companies do not wish to see their clothing go on sale for cheaper prices, as this could tarnish
their brand reputation. My goal was to use the streetwear-born principles of collaboration between different
brands, to forge collections with these high fashion companies and use their left-over clothes that don’t sell
and are unfortunately landfill bound. This way, these larger brands would be able to market a special collection
of their own upcycled pieces after a season.

I took inspiration from three main brands for this project, shown below.
These brands were chosen due to their sustainability and creative garment
construction, including technical patchworking and garment splicing.
